Being a product packaging designer requires an actual envisioning of that final product. Nearly right from the start, negotiations begin with investors to move forward on big projects like these and answers are what everyone needs. So, visualizations of the art, as well, as design explanations are required right away to put at ease those who pay the bills. Using green circles on the outside, a detailed pattern design on the inside, these are the results of explaining design choices and others agreeing to move forward.

Graphic Design is a bit more complicated than most believe, there is an explaining in words of the visual level with clients, a compromising that most people simply do not understand or haven’t had the experience. Seeing what a client sees, turning their words into real life visuals, finishing their ideas . . . completing their personal vision, this is precisely the job at hand. The following are just a few stages that may assist clients to understand the design process a bit better. Time is broken down within these categories during billing as .25 of an hour increments.

  1. Original Sketches(10%)
  2. Concept Designs(30%)
  3. Graphic Revisions(40%)
  4. Final Mechanicals(20%)

A good practice for keeping cost down revolves around everyone’s ability and dedication to being on the same page from the beginning of the project all the way to the end. All need to enter in their thoughts and ideas before the revision stage to avoid adding time which in the end adds cost to the final invoice.

Product Packaging Mechanical Art

Producing the final mechanical artwork is a completely different and unique process. Designing artwork begins with pencil on paper, then artwork evolves into digital solutions that are further revised and worked on until finally approved by the client. Those stages produce art that is presentable and beautiful to see, this is not that stage. The following graphic displays the final mechanical that is delivered to the printer. All artwork has been prepared for mass production, all areas of size and shape are broken down to be printed and folded perfectly.

How to Design Product Packaging

Clearly understanding who this product is for, the end user, the reseller, the creator of the product, the budget constraints, as well, as the packaging manufacturer guidelines is a great place to start. This project had four unique box designs to complete this final art. The Marketing Director of DMK was available for input at every turn and the board of directors was involved at each big stage. We all have a say, even the person that is randomly ask their opinion during the process.
